Taking Over a Space..

My aim in this Installation is to take over a space, in this case it is my studio! I thought about the roots as they grow and multiply they also take over there space I thought it was time I started to do the same. I used the ribbons in a pervious piece and had them taking over my desk, this time I took away my desk given me more room to display and hang my work! I am working with rope as it is more organic and when manipulated these little bits of rope stick out and kind of reminds me of roots, almost like small hairy bits! It also takes great to nylon dyes!

I am moving further on with my project and taking it to a new stage instead of having the lines flow and overlap like the roots I am taking the idea of the connecting lines and negative space it creates but changing the direction of the line making them geometric and spreading the lines across the room as if it is like a large sheet covering this unoccupied space! By connecting the lines I can keep adding and adding more rope till It takes over the whole space! Using the rope as a drawing tool I plan to then document this process and using the images as if they were drawings and creating something with them.
Colour is also a big element in this piece I am again using these femine colours each piece of rope hand dyed a different colour when there joined together the colours all connect just like piece itself! I then plan to take this piece and place it somewhere abandoed/unocuppied were you would never except to find femine colours let alone this take over of rope! I have also hand dyed pieces of fabric and attached them to some of the rope just to highlight the negative space and make the viewer more aware of it when looking at this piece! It also makes the piece more interactive and some people can’t help but touch the fabric some have even said that is reminds them of a hammock, parachute and various other things and by doing this they are interacting with the piece it is getting them to think and have there own opinion!
As can be seen in these images each line is connected to a different colour. I never attach a line going straight accross to another one I have to attach it at an angle because when roots spread out they never grow in a straight line and they always grow out from another root.

Following a line..

Also the colour element again people have been saying that the colours brighten up the space that is makes the space more inviting, makes them feel good and even makes the space more cosy so It will be interesting to see what the response is when the piece is placed somewhere cold and out of context will it brighten it up or look out of place will soon see...

Maria Nepomuceno

Maria Nepomuceno Brazilian artists creates pieces using traditional Latin American craft techniques,  woven forms made of rope straw and beads and other objects!! Her use of colour is amazing as are the meaning behind her pieces!! She creates outdoor and indoor installations!!

I love her work it is so colourful and interesting, the way she connects each piece and displays them!!
 The above image Nepomuceno explains:
'Through the spiral movement of the sewing of ropes and necklaces (the same movement of the DNA, umbilical cord, planets, cyclones,…) it is possible to feel the PULSATION of matter that has the real desire of being in tune with our pulsation.'

Our materials are similar although techniques are very different, her work is based on movement and she creates this by connecting her pieces. I am working on connections, overlapping of lines taken the underground space that roots create and creating it in another context and taking over spaces! I am trying to bring the underground to the surface and experimenting with scale, form, colour and location.

In the above piece she is showing her connections with DNA, umbilical cord etc and how she is connected to it all as this installation is created at her birth place!! I love how the bright blue looks against the colour of the roof and her red dress against the colour of the grass!! Just again is a great example of why I love to use bright bold colours in my own work it makes the piece!! Could not imagine this being Black of a dule colour it just would not work!! It reminds me of my outdoor installation below and how the colours look against the grass!!

Colour and Line Outdoor Installation Video

Colour and Line Outdoor Installation

I have create an installation piece using hand dyed rope and lightweight fabrics as my materials, the rope takes to the colour of the dyes brilliantly as I wanted each colour to be bright and bold as to make the piece more alive and to set a happy mood within my space which is my studio! I still have some work to do on this piece so images etc will follow soon!!

Moving on from this then I have created another piece using the same materials only outside, attaching the rope from one tree to the next and adding some colourful fabric, the bright colour looks great against the natural green of the leafs and also reminds me of my last outdoor installation and how the colour of the clothes looked against the green grass!!

Still moving on from where I originally started but still showing the relation of lines overlapping continuing taking over a space but again bring the colour element into this piece!! Using the fabric to focus the viewers attention to the negative space that the lines create!!

Experimenting with line, colour and composition ..

Through the use of photography I experimented with line, colour, composition and depth of the image by using different coloured ribbons and overlapping them, first on a plan backround then on a black backround.

This I used a piece of black sugar paper and cut a circle to frame the lines..

Black backround, the flash worked very well in these photos as can be seen the ribbons are very bright and
striking..

Jessica Stockholder

Jessica Stockholder is an installation artist, her work is abstract and has no 'meaning' behind it. She combines objects that would normally not be put together and works using house hold items, objects that are cheap and in reach. She also works with bright bold colours, plastics being one of her main sources!

I am currently using Stockholders work as inspiration to my own! I too love to use bright and famine colours and combining them together I just feel colours make everything more interesting and happier! I also like her use of materials as an artist I have struggled some what with using items that are in my reach instead of running out and buying materials, with the ribbons in my last installation although I brought it as far as I think it needed to go it was only after it was finished I realised I didn’t need to hand stitch all this fancy ribbon I could get the a similar effect with my dirty washing and now I am currently working with dyeing rope and straps of fabric all in my reach! Some of stockholders installations as pictured below are so large that they fill the room, that is what I am currently trying to do with my installation piece.

I watched some YouTube videos of Stockholder but this one stuck with me!! I can relate to how she speaks about her work and how as an artist form is so important and even though she could not explain why she placed her objects, she will no when each piece is finished, I find with my current work I am overlapping and connecting lines that are then creating these negative spaces when I am looking at what piece of rope to put were I cant explain to everyone why I placed it were I did for me it just works.

Outdoor Space..

I continued with my outdoor work but used what I already had made out of my clothes only this time placed them on steps, so I could create another effect with the overlapping of the lines within a smaller area.. Which I found this to be more effective!!
